Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Healthcare and Financials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Basic Materials, Telecoms and Consumer Services sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.05%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.02%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.18%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM), which rose 1.54% or 2.22 points to trade at 146.47 at the close. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) added 1.22% or 1.26 points to end at 104.93 and The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) was up 0.93% or 1.02 points to 110.75 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which lost 1.95% or 1.45 points to trade at 72.79 in late trade. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) declined 1.56% or 0.92 points to end at 58.19 and Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) shed 1.31% or 0.72 points to 54.09.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Apache Corporation (NYSE:APA) which rose 8.06% to 54.82, Teradata Corporation (NYSE:TDC) which was up 7.66% to settle at 26.27 and Cimarex Energy Co (NYSE:XEC) which gained 7.09% to close at 113.68.
The worst performers were L Brands Inc (NYSE:LB) which was down 12.04% to 70.53 in late trade, CenturyLink Inc (NYSE:CTL) which lost 8.91% to settle at 28.20 and Murphy Oil Corporation (NYSE:MUR) which was down 7.77% to 30.26 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Fairway Group Holdings Corp (NASDAQ:FWM) which rose 345.64% to 0.2451, Synacor Inc (NASDAQ:SYNC) which was up 158.16% to settle at 3.64 and Bind Therap (NASDAQ:BIND) which gained 59.04% to close at 0.66.
The worst performers were Pernix Therapeutics Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:PTX) which was down 45.75% to 0.575 in late trade, Globus Maritime Ltd (NASDAQ:GLBS) which lost 28.95% to settle at 0.4700 and Papa Murphys Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:FRSH) which was down 23.59% to 9.49 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1751 to 1556 and 40 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1633 fell and 916 advanced, while 66 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.75% to 15.93.
In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was up 0.37% or 4.70 to $1279.10 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 1.39% or 0.61 to hit $44.39 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 1.14% or 0.51 to trade at $45.13 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.73% to 1.1402, while USD/JPY rose 0.24% to 107.28.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.53% at 93.76.
