Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Technology, Utilities and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.43%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.52%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.82%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which rose 1.61% or 2.91 points to trade at 183.67 at the close. 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) added 1.38% or 2.71 points to end at 198.51 and UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) was up 1.22% or 2.11 points to 174.70 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE), which lost 1.05% or 0.34 points to trade at 32.12 in late trade. E I du Pont de Nemours & Co (NYSE:DD) declined 0.57% or 0.44 points to end at 77.38 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) shed 0.39% or 0.20 points to 51.57.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Brown Forman (NYSE:BFb) which rose 7.54% to 56.92, Qorvo Inc (NASDAQ:QRVO) which was up 3.39% to settle at 78.07 and Autodesk Inc (NASDAQ:ADSK) which gained 3.14% to close at 113.36.
The worst performers were Advance Auto Parts Inc (NYSE:AAP) which was down 2.71% to 147.37 in late trade, TripAdvisor Inc (NASDAQ:TRIP) which lost 2.52% to settle at 42.97 and Mallinckrodt (NYSE:MNK) which was down 2.46% to 40.04 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Nutraceutical International (NASDAQ:NUTR) which rose 50.54% to 42.15, Puma Biotechnology Inc (NASDAQ:PBYI) which was up 39.15% to settle at 52.60 and Polarityte Inc (NASDAQ:COOL) which gained 24.85% to close at 16.7800.
The worst performers were Marathon Patent Group Inc (NASDAQ:MARA) which was down 30.77% to 0.180 in late trade, Top Ships Inc (NASDAQ:TOPS) which lost 26.81% to settle at 0.5050 and Biostage Inc (NASDAQ:BSTG) which was down 21.67% to 0.235 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2158 to 1057 and 49 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1616 rose and 884 declined, while 110 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 9.30% to 10.92.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.53% or 6.68 to $1260.28 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 0.77% or 0.39 to hit $51.06 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 0.32% or 0.17 to trade at $53.78 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.29% to 1.1240, while USD/JPY fell 0.04% to 111.22.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.14% at 96.86.
