Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Telecoms and Healthcare sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.14%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.29%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.26%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which rose 0.65% or 0.23 points to trade at 35.80 at the close. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) added 0.60% or 1.09 points to end at 182.02 and United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX) was up 0.56% or 0.62 points to 112.28 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX), which lost 1.20% or 1.36 points to trade at 111.81 in late trade. Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) declined 1.18% or 0.59 points to end at 49.44 and Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) shed 1.05% or 0.36 points to 33.99.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Humana Inc (NYSE:HUM) which rose 2.45% to 217.95, Viacom B Inc (NASDAQ:VIAB) which was up 1.75% to settle at 42.93 and Albemarle Corporation (NYSE:ALB) which gained 1.65% to close at 103.79.
The worst performers were Frontier Communications Corporation (NASDAQ:FTR) which was down 5.07% to 2.62 in late trade, Endo International PLC (NASDAQ:ENDP) which lost 4.39% to settle at 10.90 and Southwestern Energy Company (NYSE:SWN) which was down 4.22% to 7.61 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Turtle Beach Corp (NASDAQ:HEAR) which rose 33.65% to 1.390, Aurinia Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:AUPH) which was up 32.46% to settle at 7.100 and Ignite Restaurant Group Inc (NASDAQ:IRG) which gained 31.58% to close at 0.430.
The worst performers were Avinger Inc (NASDAQ:AVGR) which was down 20.00% to 2.10 in late trade, Rennova Health Inc (NASDAQ:RNVA) which lost 18.92% to settle at 2.400 and Oncobiologics Inc (NASDAQ:ONS) which was down 14.19% to 2.66 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2228 to 991 and 38 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1596 fell and 888 advanced, while 120 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 1.78% to 11.44.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.80% or 9.75 to $1215.75 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April fell 0.17% or 0.09 to hit $53.11 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract fell 0.20% or 0.11 to trade at $55.90 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.15% to 1.0566, while USD/JPY rose 0.10% to 114.00.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.14% at 101.81.
