Priest stabbed during Mass in Canada's biggest church

TORONTO, March 22 (Reuters) - A priest was stabbed at St. Joseph's Oratory, Canada's biggest church, in Montreal as he was celebrating Mass on Friday, police said.

The suspect, who rushed at the priest and attacked him with a sharp object, was detained by church security until police arrived, according to Montreal police.

No details were available on the identity of the suspect.

Local media reported the man ran at Father Claude Grou from the back of the rectory, citing church spokeswoman Celine Barbeau, who could not immediately be reached.

The suspect was in custody and waiting to meet with an investigator, while the "lightly injured" priest was taken to a hospital, according to the police recording.
